Robert A. Cox, AIA

I first understood the power of architecture through my grandmother’s paintings—studies of the simple, honest vernacular of rural North Carolina. That early observation evolved into a formal pursuit of the art of architecture.

My education in Art History at Wake Forest and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University provided the framework; my tenure at Robert A.M. Stern Architects provided the rigor. Today, I apply that same discipline to residential projects that prioritize proportion over ornament, narrative over fads, form over gimmicks.

My practice is rooted in the pursuit of permanence and beauty. I believe that a house should not merely be drawn, but architecturally composed—grounded in the logic of its plan and elevation, the honesty of its materials, and the intelligence of its detailing.

As an architect and a father, I understand that a home is a vessel for life. I strive to design houses that feel like home: a sanctuary that feels inevitable, as if it has always belonged to the landscape and the light.
